In the Gospel of today, from Mark 10:17-30, a man asked Jesus about what he should do to inherit eternal life. Jesus referred him to the decalogue. The first commandment pointed to by Jesus was ‘you must not kill’. In the light of this we are called upon to reflect on the sanctity of life and the dignity of human beings. With this background we receive the pastoral letter on assisted suicide, issued by Cardinal Vincent Nichols.
In this pastoral letter, the Cardinal proposes three points for our consideration. These are to aid us in the debate on euthanasia, and to guide our action and communication with our Members of Parliament to oppose the bill being rushed into law. He admonishes “be careful what you wish for” because the “right to die can become a duty to die” and that “being forgetful of God belittles our humanity”.
Speak with your MP, and raise your concerns.
